Marienkirche: Berlin’s fascination with death
At Marienkirche you can see the preoccupation Berliners have with death. The really old Marienkirche (church, built in 1292) has a very interesting and weird fresco. Disintegrated bodies that look like E.T dance with men in colorful robes on the walls and pillars of this Berlin church. This Totentanz (dead men’s dance) was created in the Marienkirche when the Black Death hit Berlin (1484).
The interior of the Marienkirche also shows the preoccupation with death. The decorations on the graves in the church are full of fantasy and sinister. There is a statue of the dead chew on their own bones. But the dead don’t have to feel lonely in the Marienkirche. Little chubby angels guard them while they play the lute.
